When It's Cold Get Your Car Started Early

‘Tis the season! In the cold areas of the country, that means the remote start season. With the holidays upon us, and Santa’s elves shining up the sleigh, let's take a look at what to do once us “northerners” have unwrapped that remote car starter we have been dying for. At first glance you may wonder what you have gotten yourself into when looking at all those wires. However, when you are the only person to leave work without scraping icey windows in a toasty warm vehicle it will be worth while.

Depending on the vehicle, remote car starters can be very complicated to install (e.g., in American cars). If you have little or no 12 volt experience, then this is definitely not something you want to tackle yourself. Go find yourself an authorized dealer! With the complexities of modern vehicles, the computer modules, the resistances of data bus wires, or even the dangers of some of the hybrid vehicles electricity, a novice really should trust a competent and QUALIFIED shop. As a former professional installer for ten years my philosophy is simple for choosing a shop: If they solder all connections and offer a lifetime warranty on their installations you should be able to trust them. There is a never ending debate online about soldering connections vs. solderless crimp connectors, but I can tell you this: in all my years installing, I have never had to fix another shop’s install that soldered their connections. Moving on.

Before beginning we need to test if your vehicle has a factory alarm system. Most customers don't even know they have it. Roll down your window, shut off the vehicle, hit the power lock button, wait a few minutes, reach inside the vehicle and manually open the door either with the internal handle or by pulling up the door lock plunger, and open the door. Did your horn start honking?

If so, you need to hook up your factory alarm disarm wire. This will be coming out of your door boot. To test it: use your digital multimeter on the correct wire listed from the vehicle's wiring sheet, turn the key in the door to unlock. When unlocking the door with your key it should register the correct polarity on your meter. Details for testing wires are listed below.

Viper 5901 Security and Remote Start System Review

The Smarter Starter

If you've been keeping on top of current automotive electronic trends or are a fan of Apple's TV commercials, you've undoubtedly seen or heard about the Viper Smart Start system from Directed Electronics (DEI). While many people have an idea of what the Smart Start does (see the video below), not many realize that the Smart Start module and corresponding Smartphone App only receives and transmits signals to a separate Viper remote starter/security system. The remote starting and security portion of the Smart Start system is actually performed by one of four available Smart Start compatible Viper Alarm/Remote Start Systems (there are also three remote-starter only options available as well). We decided to shed some light on one of these Smart Start compatible systems and had DEI send us their Viper 5901 Responder LCD system to review.

Viper 5901 Responder LC3

The Viper 5901 Responder LC3 SuperCode SST 2-Way Security and Remote Start System (yes, that's the full name of this system!) has come a long way from the Viper systems I first installed back in the 90s. Gone are the external bank of relays, the external shock sensor, the standalone LED, and valet switch- instead the outboard relays and shock sensor are now integrated into the hideaway module, and the LED and valet switch have been integrated into what Viper calls the Control Center. The classic 4-button remote from the 90s has been evolved into a stylish 2-way remote with an LCD display that’s 20% larger than previous generations of Viper products. However, to truly appreciate the engineering and innovation that Directed puts into their Viper products, we decided to test out the Viper 5901 by installing it into a manual-transmission equipped 1998 Honda CR-V.

Installation and Features
From an installation standpoint, the Viper 5901 Responder LC3 is definitely not a do-it-yourself affair—but Directed Electronics has definitely made it easier for the professional to install. The integrated XpressPort and D2D Serial Data Port allows installers to plug and play vehicle-specific interface modules without the need of wiring in additional connections to the alarm. Integrated on-board relays for the remote starter and parking light flash help to reduce the amount of wiring bulk that has to be integrated and/or hidden with the vehicle’s electrical system. There are three menus of programming features and options that can be accessed via standard valet switch/counting chirps method while there is one additional advanced programming menu that can only be accessed with Directed’s Bitwriter options programmer.

Years ago, when it came to getting the ultimate range on your keyless entry/remote start system there was only one sure-fire solution: put the remote to your chin and press the button (it does actually work) and hope that you’d successfully started or disarmed your vehicle from a few hundred feet away. Today, manufacturers are producing remote transmitters that feature advertised ranges of up to a mile; but even these transmitters face range limitations caused by signal interference and obstructions that decrease the effective range of the remote to just a few thousand feet. But why limit yourself to a few thousand feet of transmitting range when you can lock/unlock or start your vehicle from tens, hundreds, or even thousands of miles away? To test out the ultimate in "remote" vehicle control, we evaluated Directed Electronics latest in automotive convenience, the Viper SmartStart. With the Viper SmartStart system and an iPhone, Blackberry, or Android smartphone, you can control your vehicle from virtually anywhere you have cellular service via an easy to use smartphone-based app.

SmartStart Phones

The SmartStart hardware comes in three different configurations: a standalone module, the VSM200, a convenience remote start/keyless entry system; the VSS3000; and a fully loaded remote start/security system, the VSS5000. As a standalone module, the VSM200 is geared towards users who already have a Viper security or remote start system in their vehicle allowing them to easily add long distance control of their vehicle via smartphone. For users who don’t already have a Viper system installed, the VSS3000 and VSS5000 systems options bundle the VSM200 SmartStart module with the desired level of security and convenience into a simple "one-box" solution.

What makes the SmartStart setup so smart is the GSM hardware within the smartphone-sized hideaway module. By utilizing the existing cellular network infrastructure the Viper SmartStart system allows users to remote start, lock, unlock, pop the trunk, and activate panic mode on their vehicle practically anywhere within the US or Canada without having to worry about interfering radio signals. As long as the vehicle is located within cellular coverage and the user’s smartphone has cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity, the SmartStart system will respond.


The application software for the Viper SmartStart comes in three flavors: iPhone, Android, and Blackberry. All are free downloads from their respective app stores. The only noticeable difference between the smartphone app versions was the layout, as the devices all have different screen sizes and resolutions.
